THE ARTIST

ANISH KAPOOR GENERALLY KEEPS HIMSELF TO HIMSELF AND VERY RARELY SPEAKS ABOUT HIS WORK, THEREFORE FINDING ANY INSIGHT INTO HIS PROCESSES AND WAVE LENGTH HAS BEEN A TASK IN ITSELF. KAPOORS APPROACH IS GENERALLY TO PRODUCE A PIECE OF WORK THAT SATISFIES HIMSELF HIS WORK HAS CHANGED FROM THAT OF HIS EARLY YEARS WHEN IT WAS BRIGHTLY COLOURED AND PRODUCED USING PIGMENTS. NOWADAYS IT CONSISTS OF WORK THAT IS PRODUCED IN ULTRA MODERN STAINLESS STEEL AND PLAYS WITH LIGHT, SPACE, LOCATION AND REFLECTION. THE WORK HE PRODUCES IS DESIGNED WITH ITS LOCATION IN MIND THIS IS ONE OF HIS GUIDELINES WHICH IS CLEAR IN CLOUD GATE IN WHICH HIS SCULPTURE REFLECTS THE BUILDINGS THAT IT IS SURROUNDED BY. HE PRODUCES WORK FOR BOTH GALLERY SPACES AND OUTDOOR PUBLIC SPACES, PERSONALLY ANY OF HIS WORK THAT HAS BEEN PRODUCED ON A LARGE SCALE LOOKS IMPRESSIVE. IN A WAY I WAS DIRECTED BY ALL ASPECTS OF THE ARTIST FROM HIS PAST TO THE MATERIAL HE USES AND IN PARTICULAR THE KNOWLEDGE THAT HE DOES NOT ACTUALLY CREATE HIS ONW WORK. WHEN I CONNECTED THIS TO THE OBJECT RESEARCH I DECIDED TO WORK ON THE PHRASE “BORN WITH A SILVER SPOON….” AS I THOUGHT NO OTHER ARTIST COULD AFFORD TO USE SUCH EXPENSIVE MATERIALS, MOST OTHER ARTISTS PRODUCE THEIR OWN WORK, HE WAS FROM A PRIVILAGED BACKGROUND AND AMONG OTHER THINGS HIS WORK SHARES SOME SIMILARITIES WITH SPOONS.
